David LaBriere Freedom Rally Photograph Collection

On May 26, 1963, David LaBriere, then a teenage college student, attended and photographed the Freedom Rally at Wrigley Field in South Los Angeles. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the featured speaker of the star-studded event to raise funds for the civil rights cause in America. Among the twenty-four photographs in the collection are some of Dr. King’s notable supporters including Ralph Abernathy, Sammy Davis, Jr., Maurice Dawkins, H.H. Brookins, Wyatt Tee Walker, A. A. Peters, Dorothy Dandridge, Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman, and May Britt. Mr. LaBriere graciously donated the collection to the Tom & Ethel Bradley Center at the University Library in 2024.
