Creating TIFFs and JPEGs from Slides and Negatives

Purpose:
to create a 2400 dpi archival TIFF image using the Nikon slide scanner, then compress to 450 dpi presentation JPEG image.

Scan the image -- slides
  • Place the image in the slide scanner adapter
  • Open the software
    • Open Adobe Photoshop
    • In Photoshop open File > Import > Nikon Scan 3.1
  • Make sure the setting are correct:
    • Positive; Negative (Color); or Negative (B/W)
    • Grayscale; Calibrated RGB; CMYK
  • Click on the "Preview" button to get a preliminary scan
  • Hit the "Scan" button
  • Once the scanning is completed, close the scanning windows

Scan the image -- negatives
  • Place the image in the negative scanner adapter
  • Open the software
    • Open Adobe Photoshop
    • In Photoshop open File > Import > Nikon Scan 3.1
  • Make sure the setting are correct:
    • Positive; Negative (Color); or Negative (B/W)
    • Grayscale; Calibrated RGB; CMYK
  • Insert film strip, emulsion side down, into adapter. Two to six frames of 35mm film can be inserted into adapter. Once the film has been inserted the adapter's feed mechanism will be activated and the film will be loaded automatically.
  • Click the thumbnail drawer tab to open the thumbnail drawer. Choose the frame to be scanned from the thumbnail drawer.
  • Click on the "Preview" button to get a preliminary scan
  • Adjust the marquee (moving dashed line) to cover the area around the image
  • Hit the "Scan" button
  • Eject the film strip
  • Once the scanning is completed, close the scanning windows

Save as a TIFF File
  • Select Image > Image Size. Change Resolution to 2400 dpi
  • Select Image > Rotate Canvas> 90° CCW or CW
  • Select File > Save As ... to save the image as a TIFF file
    • Use the Acquisition or Call number or other identifying character to name the file
    • Save in LSAT2_SFV TIFF
    • TIFF Format

Save as a JPEG File
  • Select Image > Image Size. Change Resolution to 450 dpi
  • Select Image > Adjust > Auto Contrast
  • Select "Save As":
    • Save in LSTA2_SFV JPG
    • JPEG Format
    • Choose Save
    • In the "JPEG options," set Quality to 12, and Format Options to "Standard."
  • Print if necessary
  • Close the Windows
