Resizing TIFF Images and Saving as JPEG for Inclusion in ContentDM Database (simplified)
Purpose: to create a JPEG image for
import into an the Oviatt Library Digital Collections
database using ContentDM Acquisition Station. The
following procedure does not apply to Archival images.
- Open the TIFF image in Photoshop.
- Click Image > Image size to open the image
size dialog box.
- Look at the height and width dimensions under "Document
Size." These numbers
reflect the size of the original object. Change the resolution:
- If the dimensions are 5 x 7 in. or larger, change the resolution
to 100 dpi (pixels per inch). Click OK.
- If the dimensions are smaller than 5 x 7 in. , or if it is
a text document, change the resolution to 300 dpi. Click OK.
- If the original item is a 35mm slide or negative, change
the resolution to 450 dpi. Click OK.
- Click Image > Image size to open the image
size dialog box (again).
- Make sure "Constrain Proportions" box
is checked. Look at the "Pixel Dimensions" area, which
indicates the display size of the item at 100%.
- Click File > Save As to save edited image
as a JPEG. In the "JPEG options" set Quality to 12, and Format Options to "Standard."
NOTE: Prior to ContentDM Version 4, images were also resized if :
- The item was an image (without text), and the width was greater
than 800 pixels.
- The item was text-based and the dimensions was greater than 1200
pixels by 800 pixels.
