| Title | In The Name of the Great Jehovah |
| Description | Samuel Dickstein was a Congressman from New York who, during the early 1930s, served as Chairman of the Committee on Naturalization and Immigration. In this capacity, he became aware of growing fascism and antisemitism in the U.S.; as a result, he introduced a resolution calling for the formation of a special committee to probe un-American activities in the United States. The "Dickstein Resolution" (H.R. #198) was passed in March 1934, with John William McCormack named Chairman; Rep. Dickstein served as Vice-Chairman. Later, in 1938, Dickstein was instrumental in establishing the Select Committee on Un-American Activities (the 'Dies Committee') with Martin Dies, Jr. as Chairman. The role of this committee was also to investigate fascist and Communist groups in the United States; it later became HUAC. This cartoon depicts Dickstein, wearing a tri-corner hat and weilding a pistol, holding a piece of paper which reads "DON'T TALK! DON'T WRITE! DON'T THINK!" The heading reads "In The Name Of The Great Jehovah And The Committee On Un-American Activities" (an homage, perhaps, to the words of Ethan Allen as he took Fort Ticonderoga: "In the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress!"). 7 x 5 in. |
