| Title | Anti-Wendell Willkie Rally |
| Description | Picketers carry signs at an anti-Wendell Willkie rally in Los Angeles, circa 1940. Many of the protesters are women; one small child is also visible, standing near a sign reading "We Won't Willkie". Willkie was the Republican presidential nominee that year, in a hard-fought race against Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was running for a then-unprecedented third term in office. Willkie was an early and outspoken opponent of Martin Dies, a congressman from Texas who gained fame as the first chairman -- and one of the original architects -- of the House Un-American Activities Committee (then known as the House Committee Investigating Un-American Activities). 8 x 10 in. |
