Congressman Untiring in Exposing Subversive Elements (part 1)
TitleCongressman Untiring in Exposing Subversive Elements (part 1)
DescriptionThe February 11, 1943 edition of the Los Angeles Examiner featured Representative Martin Dies of Texas as the topic of its editorial page. Dies gained fame as the first chairman -- and one of the original architects -- of the House Un-American Activities Committee (then known as the House Committee Investigating Un-American Activities). The page features the following headlines: "Representative Dies Able, Courageous Champion of Americanism" and "Congressman Untiring in Exposing Subversive Elements". The editorial basically sings the praises of Dies (who it says "opposed and exposed the enemies of America at actual personal risk"), and applauds the U.S. Congress for showing such confidence in and respect for him. The page also features 3 large photos of Dies: one in which he is banging a gavel; one in which he examines a Japanese naval map of the Pacific; and one featuring what they accurately describe as a "vigorous oratorical pose," in which he is shown with both fists pumped into the air as he speaks. 21 x 16 in.
