| Description | On September 26, 1940, a bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives (76th Congress, 3rd Session) to prohibit Communists and members of the German-American Bund -- as well as some other organizations -- from working on national-defense contracts. The bill, House Resolution 10577, was introduced by John McDowell of Pennsylvania (who would later become a member of the House Un-American Activities Committee). From the introduction: "...it shall be unlawful for any person who is a member of the Communist Party, the German-American Bund, or of any organization subject to foreign control which engages in political activities, or who associates or affiliates with members of any such organization or indicates sympathy with the purposes or aims of any such organization, to perform any employment in the performance of any contract with the United States in connection with the national-defense..." 11 x 7.5 in. |
