| Title | Movie still from "The House of Rothschild", 20th Century Pictures, 1934 |
| Description | The film, House of Rothschild, was made in 1934 when Hitler's regime was in its infancy, shows that concern was already brewing over the burgeoning antisemitism in Germany. The story explores the lives of the Rothschilds, a family of powerful Jewish bankers in 19th century Europe. Their power during the Napoleonic wars enables Nathan Rothschild (shown here, played by George Arliss) to force the antisemitic Prussian ambassador (at the far right, played by Boris Karloff) to grant citizenship to the Jews in exchange for financial support. The great character actress Helen Westley is seated, looking up at Arliss. 8 x 10 in. |
