National magazine The Deaf American honors San Fernando Valley State College's Dr. Ray L. Jones, featuring a photo of him on the cover of their November 1967 issue. Jones, along with Wayne McIntire, developed an interdisciplinary curriculum in leadership and administration for deaf and hard-of-hearing students within the then school of education. Called the National Leadership Training Program (NLTP), their program was the precursor to the National Center on Deafness at California State University, Northridge. The first class premiered in 1962. Their work led to numerous innovative programs for the deaf and hard of hearing in education, interpreter and teacher training, as well as the implementation of the country's first comprehensive mainstream services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
