San Fernando Valley State College (now CSUN) Professor Bess Lomax Hawes (pictured left) and popularly known anthropologist Margaret Mead in discussion at conference. Dr. Mead's areas of special interest centered on issues of child-rearing and personality in other than Western cultures, particularly in the Pacific islands such as Samoa and New Guinea. Professor Hawes, folklorist, teacher, and musician, was awarded a National Medal of the Arts by President Bill Clinton in 1993 and was the first director of the Folk and Traditional Arts Program at the National Endowment of the Arts.
