Playbill for the Mission Play by John Steven McGroarty, dedication performance at the new Mission Playhouse in San Gabriel, California, on March 5, 1927. Construction of the playhouse was funded in part by McGroarty, whose dream it was, the program notes indicate, that there be "an enduring home in which his pageant drama of California could be set." This highly romanticized play traces the history of the California missions from 1769 to 1849. The spread features a panoramic tableau from the first act of the play (see also postcard depiction, Identifier JSMms02B.jpg). Beneath the tableau is a statement acknowledgin of the contribution made by the officers and directors of the Mission Playhouse Corporation, which funded construction of the playhouse. Among those named are W.I. Hollingsworth, E.L. Doheny, Harry Chandler, W.P. Whitsett and Harold Janss. Also acknowledged are the architect, the builder (the William Simpson Construction Company, which also built the Hollywood Pantages Theater and the Griffith Observatory), the superintendent, and the decorator. leaves 8 and 9 of 12 leaves scanned. laid paper with tied spine. 12 x 8 in.
