Frequent fires ravaged the Calabasas area. Here a fire destroyed the brush on Water Tank Hill at the left side of Blue Bird Drive, at the end of the road. This terrible fire was in the early 1940's. Developer Lingenbrink thought it looked so awful that he sold the property to Jan de Swart at a bargain price. De Swart is seen here at work on fire-scarred hill. (Lingenbrink soon regretted the sale, as the green plants came back.) The Foster Ranch was across the road from de Swarts. Olinka Hrdy at first lived on his side of the street and then later moved across the street. Olinka, also an artist, was a descedant of Native Americans and the first President of Czechoslovakia. Donor: Jan de Swart. Black and white photographic reproduction, 5 x 7 in.
