The California Chicano News Media Association (CCNMA) gives out a scholarship in memory of Joel Garcia, its co-founder (along with Frank del Olmo) each year. Garcia worked as a newspaper reporter and general assignment reporter for KNBC and KTTV television stations in Los Angeles and was working for KCET until his death in 1977. The CCNMA's mission is "to promote diversity in the news media by providing encouragement, scholarships and educational programs for Latinos pursuing careers in the news media, and to foster an accurate and fair portrayal of Latinos in the news media, and promoting the social, economic and professional advancement of Latino journalists." Frank del Olmo was born in Los Angeles, California on May 18, 1948. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), del Olmo entered California State University, Northridge (CSUN) to study journalism. He joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1971, and served as its associate editor until his death in 2004. 11 in. x 8.5 in.
