This flier advertises the intentions of the Garfield High School Strike Committee in regard to the student walkouts. In March of 1968, Mexican-American students from Lincoln, Garfield, Roosevelt, Belmont, and Wilson High Schools walked out to protest the racism and educational inequality Mexican-American youth faced in public schools. Later that week, students from the predominately African-American Thomas Jefferson High School also joined this act of civil disobedience. Thirteen participants in the walkout, including Sal Castro, who emerged as the teacher spokesperson for the students, were arrested under the charge of conspiracy to commit various crimes. The charges were soon dropped. Journalist Frank del Olmo collected this flier and other information like it to help in the background research of his newspaper articles. Frank del Olmo was born in Los Angeles, California on May 18, 1948. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), del Olmo entered California State University, Northridge (CSUN) to study journalism. He joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1971, and served as its associate editor until his death in 2004. 11 in. x 8.5 in.
