Jorge Carpio was the founder, former leader, and secretary general of Union del Centro Nacional (UCN), then the largest opposition party in Guatemala. He finished second in Guatemala's presidential elections of 1985 and 1991. Carpio was also a member of the Guatemalan delegation to the United Nations (UN). Prominent in human rights struggles, Carpio was assassinated in 1993. The photograph would have accompanied a newspaper article by Frank del Olmo while he was working as a staff writer specializing in Latin American affairs for the Los Angeles Times. Frank del Olmo was born in Los Angeles, California on May 18, 1948. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), del Olmo entered California State University, Northridge (CSUN) to study journalism. He joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1971, and served as its associate editor until his death in 2004. 8 in. x 10 in.
