The Mothers of East Los Angeles (MELA) started in 1985 when a group of women organized to fight a proposal for the construction of a new state prison in their neighborhood. Their efforts were successful and the group has gained national recognition. The Mothers have become known for their advocacy and activism on behalf of issues that include protecting the environment, lead-poison awareness, water conservation, graffiti abatement and various other social issues. Ms. Gutiérrez, President and Co-founder of MELA, wrote to U.S. Attorney General, Janet Reno, asking that justice be served following an attack on Mexican undocumented individuals carried out by sheriffs in Riverside County, California. The brutal attack was captured on videotape and was aired on national television. In this letter, Ms. Gutiérrez states her opinions regarding the injustices that undocumented workers face in the United States and asks that the sheriffs responsible for the attack receive a stronger punishment for their actions. 11 in. x 8.5 in.
